An alternative approach could be to use this helper:

(let ((proc (syscall->procedure '* "gnu_get_libc_version" '())))
(lambda ()

(throw 'system-error "gnu-get-libc-version"
"gnu-get-libc-version: ~A"

...and maybe set a %glibc-version variable that can be used as needed.
