Oops, you sent your mail just a few minutes before mine; just reading it
now :-)

I push a fresh wip-hurd-vm, which is the above: wip-hurd-disk rebase
onto Ludo's series...almost the same.

Yes, I think this is more or less my idea too and what I did...except
for leaving my hurd-specific qemu-image/vm-image work rest.
