best way to find the answer is to try.  e.g., 1.4.1.88 does this, but
using low-level libltdl search-path munging mechanisms instead of env
vars (same idea, though).  you could install 1.4.1.88 in /tmp/a/b/c and
see how it behaves.  i would welcome suggestions on how to improve the
implementation (see end of ice-9/boot-9/module-system.scm).
