I guess what I'm suggesting is to split the currently planned 1.8
into a leaner 1.8 and a 1.10, i.e., to make 1.8 less ambitious in
order to get out bugfixes and new technology faster.
The gh_ stuff (and other things in the current 1.8 TODO list) could be
done in 1.10.

Yes, this would be a typical lean 1.8 thing, and is a good argument
why a lean 1.8 release wouldn't be painful.
I just want to add that this is only a suggestion. While I think it
would be good to make a lean 1.8 release, I'm not going to argue
further for it. :-)
