Ahh, the potential fatal flaw -- where to the *.la libraries go, and
how does this strategy affect the current ltdl?  My guess is that
until we get versioning for ltdl and so can have

  /usr/lib/libguile-foo-bar.la.2.4.1

so that ltdl can find the right one, we may not be able to use the
strategy for the .so's above...
