1.5 make check failing in realloc again...

Any idea what's causing this -- it seems to go away for a while and
then come back now and then.  Right now, it's back.

I noticed that the debug-malloc on the development branch is the same
as the stable beta branch, but that gc.c had seen some changes.
Anyone know if any of the gc.c changes might be relevant, and should
be ported to the stable branch?
