It works, but only if you patch your copy of automake.  I did this
before the "make dist", so I thought that the tar.gz file should work
OK as is, though you would have a problem if you did an autogen.sh
that re-generated the files using a broken automake (which is all of
them right now AFAIK).

Another option might be to see if we can come up with a rule or rules
in the Makefile.am that would temporarily provide the missing one(s).

I'm happy with any of these solutions.  As long as the subdir approach
doesn't involve too many changes, other than the move itself and a
little bit of automakery, I'm even OK with that approach if it's the
right solution.
