Oh, and one other thing I forgot to mention.  Before I accidentally
inspire us go off the deep end or anything, we should proably consider
what other systems do (other schemes, perl, python, etc.) and see if
they shed any light on the issue.  Maybe I'm concerned for nothing and
there's a fairly simple solution...
