I don't think its a problem in general to use pre-releases of the
build utilities if they give us an advantage.  Since we'll need the
new features, we can just as well help shake out the bugs.

It's different with releasing Guile 1.6, tho.  We should probably ask
the libtool crowd whether it is a good idea to ship a `stable' release
with an alpha libtool.
