I just wrote:

   Currently, the docstrings in the libguile source are - theoretically,
   at least - written in Texinfo.  (In practice, many of them actually
   are in Texinfo, but some - for example list? - are written in an
   approximation to the plain text Info format.)  But there is no step in
   the on-line documentation system which runs these docstrings through
   makeinfo so that Texinfo markup is converted to plain text.

Unfortunately, my patches were garbled somehow so that lines beginning
with a dash had "- " inserted at the front of the line.

So if you'd like to try the patches, please ungarble them first by
running `M-x query-replace-regexp RET ^ - SPC RET RET'.
