thanks, everyone.  I now understand that this was a pipe dream.  sorry for having taken up the time.  I will check out isoscan.cfg.

probably better to email just me:  is it possible to spawn a virtual machine that simulates the boot process while linux is still running (or get good diagnostics about my current setup if booted from drive X), so that I can actually see what would actually happen if I later execute the three-finger salute?  I always feel like I am flying IFR (blind, but with intelligent guesses) when I restart.
