D4T from the thread on the Ubuntu forum reported grub svn revision 2063 
to work with Xserve 1,1 without problems, using fakebios and the proper 
kernel options.

Have a look here for grub config examples that may work:

The fakebios command seems to be required for this type of machine, and 
the noefi kernel option as well as the video= options are required for 
some kernels, you need to do some experimenting :)
