Will grub2 still be able to boot multiboot(1) binaries on x86?

Yes, it supported this before the multiboot2 commit, and it still
supports it now. In fact Jerone did work to make it all
user-invisible: the same "multiboot" command will automatically select
the appropriate loader type (either mb1 or mb2), and the same "module"
command will behave according to the multiboot kernel type.
