But now that Rae was gone it seemed as if hope had gonewith her. But such things simply couldnt happen at Silver Bush. Well, were rid av the go-pracher,glory be. Pat was too proud and hurt even to talk it over withJudy. But Judy didnt like to look at Sids eyes herself. And at times it almost seemed as if she had taken up apose of being misunderstood. Puddleduckbettern me and her as smooth as crame. Her very slippers,if left to themselves, would have danced the whole night through. Judy, its really a ridiculous and tiresome world byspells. They shut out the rain and the cold wind. Pat, at that moment, was working in the garden, at peace withherself and all the world. I hear theyre going to build a church, said Pat. Rae flung her school-books on a chair and said nothing. Ratput up a fight and clamped his teeth in Just Dogs jaw. Pat had an old sunburnedfelt hat of Sids on her head which she would not have thought. Hes anancient ould lad and shud be rispicted, sez I. Just Dog did be coming back lateron wid no rat attached, rale meek and chastened-like. Wheeler did return and did make up to Rae. Rae, dearest, dont be foolish, she said gently. His mother brings it out andshows it round whiniver company comes. Rae seemed to have locked her heart against her sisterforever.
