I can see something very similar to what you see (modulo some warnings)
with:

$ groff -b -ww  -Tutf8 -Z -man -rU1 ./long-uri.man | grep 'x X tty'

So, yes, it was the terminal that was creating a hyperlink based on a
guess.  No problem in groff(1).
