You simply insert

   \penalty -10000

to force a line break at this very place (while still retaining
justification).

On the other hand, the equivalent to `.br' (and the end of a
paragraph) is to insert an infinitely stretchable space (e.g. `\hskip
0pt plus 1fil') before `\penalty -10000' to squeeze everything at the
start of the line as much as possible.
