Yes, it will lead to failure.  As the commit message says, the groff
setup for configuration and compilation doesn't work in general for
paths that need quotation.  Changing this would be good, however, it's
a lot of work, I guess, and probably only useful after a transition to
automake and proper gnulib integration to avoid unnecessary work.
