I don't think you can do that.

Yes, pick one of the allowed ones.

    $ cat -A jerome
    .ec @$
    address@hidden@fPxyzzy$
    .ec address@hidden
    address@hidden@fPxyzzy$
    .ec ^B$
    foo^BfBbar^BfPxyzzy$
    .ec ^[$
    foo^[fBbar^[fPxyzzy$
    $ nroff jerome | grep .
    foobarxyzzy foofBbarfPxyzzy foobarxyzzy foofBbarfPxyzzy
    $

See 10.1 in CSTR 54, http://troff.org/54.pdf.  You can choose from ^B,
^C, ^E, ^F, and ^G.
