I don't understand that fix.  Could this be a problem in TBL?
I'll look up "nokeep" and see if I can make any sense out of it.

I'm probably not as sensitive to whitespace changes because I've
been previewing in an xterm, rather than (say) with xdvi.  I guess I'll
add that to my test regime in future.
