.mk only allows moving backwards (up) to a marked location.

I want to be down in text (column 2) and move back up the page an
arbitrary distance to add a pull quote in the left column and then
return down to where I was.  .mk apparently can't do that.

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but is there any reason why you can't use the .mk request? I do it when overprinting photographs.
