`*' is quite noisey visually.  A bit of a splat that attracts the eye if
your editor isn't using a font that makes it a bit small and
superscript, drawing the eye away from the macro name itself.

How about a trailing `-'?  It's quiet.  Looks OK having briefly tried
it.  And the brain is used to seeing trailing ones due to hypenation.
