Yes, maybe something like this (untested):

  .ds table-size 14.4

  .am TS
  .  ds orig-ev \\n[.ev]\"
  .  ev table          \" push the `table' environment on the stack
  .  evc \\*[orig-ev]
  .  ps \\*[table-size]
  ..

  .am TE
  .  ev                \" pop the `table' environment.
  ..
