There is a way around this, using groff's .am request, but there's a catch: you must define HEADER_LEFT/CENTER/RIGHT and FOOTER_LEFT/CENTER/RIGHT plus any style changes you want for the various parts of headers and footers in the places marked inside the .am requests in the recipe below. ---Recipe for getting both headers and footers; must come before START---
<recipe snipped> Thanks very much. It's just what I'm looking for.
I'm interested to know how you intend to use the combo of headers and footers. If your situation is a common one, I may macro-ize the above to save other users the trouble.
I use it (intend to use it) in multipage letters. Traditional letters (ie, those done on a typewriter) had their first page typed on fancy letterhead and the remaining pages on plain paper. It was the practice, particularly in Law firms, for the typiste to add headers and footers to the continuation pages. I used this setup for my own correspondence when I used FrameMaker in Windows 3.1. I haven't done Windows for over a decade now, and I have always wanted an easy way to reproduce my FrameMaker setup.
I'll send you off-list an email with a groff "letter" attachment that shows how I intend to use both headers and footers.
