Jim,
Thanks very much for your response. I understand and agree with what
you say (indeed, have been aware of what you say for some time!).

However, what triggered my mail to the list on this occasion was
Werner's statement that some of these messages (preumably to
mailman itself) have had the effect of changing individual users'
mail status (i.e. setting it to "nomail").

This struck me as "targetted", which is why I raised the issue.
