I've never heard of any.  My guess is that pic's internal workings
weren't `novel' at the time pic was written so they weren't worthy of a
paper;  any interested party could look at the source.  What was of
interest was pic's interface to the user, and how it fitted in with the
rest of the `pipeline'.
