You can change a lot already:

Strings:
.ds Lifg Figure
.ds Litb TABLE
.ds Liex Exhibit
.ds Liec Equation
.ds Licon CONTENTS

There is also the user definable macros TX and TY for the TOC,
TXxx and TYxx for Fg, TB, EC or EX.
(figures, tables, equations and exhibits)
