[Groff] Embedded equations in -me indexing macro

Hello,

We are trying to write a table of contents using the indexing macro in
'-me'. Is it possible to embed equations in the index text as with
normal paragraph text? For example:

.EQ
delim $$
gfont R
gsize 12
.EN
.(x
INTRODUCTION
.)x 1
.(x
CHAPTER 1 - $ alpha sup 2 ~+~ beta sup 2 ~=~ gamma sup 2$
.)x 5
.xp

When compiling using: groff -e -me -Tps test > test.ps

We get warning messages as follows:

test:111: warning: bad font number
test:111: warning: bad font number

If embedding equations as show above is not possible, then how does one
go about writing greek symbols within the indexing text?

We have been studying the -me reference manual and the tutorial that
comes with the groff distribution to no avail...

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sincerely,

Kurt Nowak
