[Groff] Questions about fonts

There seem's to be quite a lot of font issues, and since I have been looking at writing a pdf device for groff I wonder what I should take into consideration from the beginning, i.e. where are the pitfalls.
Would support for the default 14 builtin font's for pdf's suffice in the beginning ?
