I'll wait for the 1.18.2 release, then. Will there be any font switches neccessary, then? Or should the described \(eu sequence enough?

It does automagic context switching. If you use \(eu, you get the official design (you get an abbreviation in the tty device). If you type \(Eu you get a glyph that matches best the body text font, at least for the base 35 LaserWriter fonts. It is very simple to add matching Eu to a different font you may use (from reading europs.tmac). BTW, if you use devdvi with the EC fonts, you can use Eu to obtain an Euro (groff -m<macro> -mec -Tdvi blah.tr > blah.dvi).

Now three cheers to Werner for such an innovative solution.

I think you would have no problems using a development snapshot. They are very stable this week ;) (ftp://ftp.ffii.org/pub/groff/ snapshot-something.tar.gz)
