It does automagic context switching. If you use \(eu, you get the 
official  design (you get an abbreviation in the tty device). If you type 
\(Eu you get a glyph that matches best the body text font, at least for the 
base 35 LaserWriter fonts. It is very simple to add matching Eu to a 
different font you may use (from reading europs.tmac). BTW, if you use 
devdvi with the EC fonts, you can use Eu to obtain an Euro (groff -m<macro> 
-mec -Tdvi blah.tr > blah.dvi).
