That is entirely correct. 

In the list of predefined registers, Ossanna specifically says .w is
"Width of previous character". 

The issue that might confuses matters is that there is also a reference
to the section describing \w. But the .w register has nothing to do with
\w.

No - it contains the last character *printed*.

As your example is written, you get the width of the last character
*printed*. Which in this case is the digit generated by the \w. Quite
consistent.
