For what it's worth, the situation with Solaris troff's devpost
is as follows:

  |   is contained only in the four Courier variants (as
      the bar character), the Symbol font (as the center
      right bracket part), and ZapfDingbats.

  or  is contained only in the Symbol font (which contains
      it twice (?!), once for the bar character and once for
      the mathematical "or" symbol) and in ZapfDingbats.

Of course, ZapfDingbats is a special case, since all the funny
glyphs are mapped to "alphabetic" characters for easier access.
But the mapping in the Symbol font seems rather strange, if you
ask me.
