[Groff] meaning of \[or] glyph

What's the exact meaning of the \[or] glyph?

I think it is the same as `|', indicating a bitwise OR operation in
C code.  It is used to avoid syntactical side effects of `|' which
also servers as an absolute position indicator.

Is my interpretation correct?
