I have to use "groff -pt -ms -w all ch06.t" to get those warnings.
It looks like a point size change inside the .SS/.SE box is what
triggers the warning -- if I add the following line right before 
the .SE macros:

        .ps \n(PS

That restores the previous point size & the warnings go away.

Yeah, I noticed that too (the escaping text & the improvement).
Jon, any ideas?

Aren't there references already? (They actually say 6.4, 6.5
because that's the chapter number.)

That reminds me... I had to enclose one of the listings in .KS/.KE
to get it to stay on the page. Should that not be the default?
