        OK, I figured out that there is something weird in the PPD
        files that CUPS sets up for this printer.  If I reconfigured
        the printers to be "None (raw queue)" then everything works
        fine.

        Sorry for the bother.  Maybe I'll send hate mail to the CUPS
        people.  :-P
