We agree.  It's just a different way of writing that allows to use
.macro for something else.

This does not work with many macros from macro packages, e.g. man .TP.
And macro calls cannot be included.  Fiddling around with \c does not
help either in each case, unfortunately.

These features seem to need some more thinking.
