gcc has a sortiment of wrapper binaries ( cc, c++, f77, gcc, g++, g77 ... )
which are usualy in /bin. (configure with PREFIX=/ !!)
The real work is done by a bundle of binaries in
/lib/gcc-lib/<arch>/<version>.

The jungest wrapper is able to handle the access to the older versions.
