No.  gettext stuff should be used only for warning and error messages
coming from the troff program and its friends, sent to stderr.  It
makes no sense IMHO to provide a special interface so that macro
packages can access these warning messages -- this is not possible for
English either.

Rather, it has to be solved on the macro level similar to LaTeX.
Ricardo's solution is the right one.
