Sure, this is cleaner... Also I made a stupid mistake: I added
stdlib.h while it was already there...

PS: what do you think about my latin9 patch? is 8-bit char encoding
considered obsolete?
There is another solution: simply not using the acute in latin1...
It wasn't intended for quotes...
