well, I did a little test:

                        .so             .mso

GROFF_INPUT_PATH        no              no
GROFF_TMAC_PATH         no              yes

no means 'does not work with inclusion to some other directory which
is not either the current or the standard tmac dir'

yes means the opposite

I sometimes need the ability to include extra bits of text (which may
not be macros) which lie on personal directories etc. I generally do
it with the -M option, and with .mso it works quite well (*except* for
soelim).

here's an example: say that I have a situation like this (in fact I have
*plenty* of situations like this :)

.mso \V[SPECIAL_DIR]/some-file

it'll work for groff, but not for soelim :(
