For this sort of thing (and I regularly put blank lines in the source
for readability) the "blank line macro" '.blm' request is handy.

I set up the following:

  .\".\" Blank line macro does nothing (use ".blm" to reset default)
  .de no_blank_line_effect
  ..
  .blm no_blank_line_effect

I hope this helps! (By the way, Eddy, thanks for apologising about
the macro parameters thing, but it's OK -- for everyone, there's
a first time of encounter for everything; it's just that for some
of us it happened a long time ago ... ).
