The -u-blox firmware sat selection algorithm seems to work well.  The
elevation mask is most useful for airborne applications, or in strong
multipath areas.

Then there are a lot of other knobs to play with as well.  Many find
hat turning off GLONASS helps.  Etc.

Spend some time with gpsprof and you can see how those blend together.
