"gpspipe -r" dumps whatever the U-blox is sending to gpsd. No filtering.
So you problem is not in gpsd or gpspipe, but it how you setup your u-blox.

Unless you tell gpsd otherwise, it tries to put the GPS in u-blow binary
mode. So then you only get a few of the binary sentences converted to
pseudo-NMEA. If you want NMEA, then put the unit in NMEA mode: gpsctl -n.
But the JSON from "gpspipe -w" is much more flexible and informative, try
to use that instead.
