No worries mate, about the filename.

Actually just sussed this out at the same time I got your email.

In Qt you add the following line to the .pro file:

QMAKE_LFLAGS += -lgps

Then it compiles and links with no bother.

 Now I get an undefined reference to gps_open in libgpsmm.cpp,

gps_open is in libgps.so.  Just link that in with -lgps
