Firt thing is to set the proper serial speed before starting gpsd.  That
will cut out the autobaud delay.  Something like this:
        stty speed 38400 < /dev/ttyUSB0

Assuming your GPS is on ttyUSB0 annd ruinning at 38,400 bps.
