Gary,I closed my eyes and downgraded my @#$! GPS from firmware 4.20 to 4.00. Guess what? It started working at first attempt. So the article below (http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/message/view/home/32095350) was the most useful at the end ;-)
went on upgrading and testing: - FW 4.10 is still working.- FW 4.20 (latest available) rendered GPS unusable with gpsd (I haven't tried betas between stable versions 4.10 and 4.20)
Pretty good list of firmware and changes can be found at http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/Versions
So - first my deep apologize to keep you so busy and many thanks for help. Now what do we do? How can I help you fix it (I don't believe there's chance Garmin is going to do it)? I'm afraid some reverse engineering will be necessary here unless Garmin helps us.

I do not see how that applies."1. Garmin spanner is not working anymore with gpsd (2.93/2.95) - it was fine with 4.00. Something must have been changed - but: gpsbabel can still read the current position"
