Try creating symlink /home/riccardo and then modifying HOME environment 
variable to that path.

Cygwin should support symlinks. If it doesn't, then I guess you'll have to 
create a directory and move cygwin-related stuff to that new home.

I don't think that a more systematic solution could be performed. While adding 
autotools scripts for data files on a relatively large project (apart from just 
code), which weren't autotoolized yet, easiest solution to me was to simply 
remove spaces from any offending data files.
