FYI,

As GNUmed gets more and more features every now and then I come across a 
control that is not automatically refreshed following some 
action/calculation/whatever.

Maybe this could help

Keeping the UI updated
• When an app has many menu or toolbar items, controls,
labels, etc. that can be enabled/disabled,
checked/unchecked, toggled, etc. then it can be very
difficult to keep them all updated as program status
changes.
• wx.UpdateUIEvent is a mechanism to make it much simpler
