OK,

First attempt using hapi directly gives me the following error..

PID does not exist in the group ca.uhn.hl7v2.model.v23.message.ORU_R01

apparently there are only three elements in a ORU_R01 message. MSH,  
DSC, and RESPONSE.

Any pointers ?
