The convenience view is not v_linked_comms but v_flat_comms , and it 
would have to return blank fields anyway

contrib function  crosstab (linked_value_table,  
single_field_category_names_table)
would work on a natural join of  identity, lnk_identity2comm_chan, 
enum_comm_types, com_channel  , and would
put in  blank value fields, I presume. 

I'm happy to use whatever denomalization mechanism is included.
