I agree in regards to Debian packages.
I'm not sure if /usr/share would be used for packages only or also
non-packaged applications, which may be a considered. Most SysVr4 OSs
provide /opt. FreeBSD uses /usr/local for non-packaged applications in a
single dir. Apache build defaults to /usr/local/apache on FreeBSD.
